When most people think of generic drugs they think that it is a lower quality product in comparison to brand name drugs. In all truth, generic drugs are very similar to as brand name drugs but much cheaper. They serve the same purpose, are taken the same way, and have the same side effects, etc. The only other difference besides the price is the appearance of the medication. This distinction does not change the effectiveness, or safety of a generic drug in comparison to its brand name version.
The reason for the significantly lower prices of generic drugs is that the manufacturers of these drugs do not have to put money into the research and development that goes into creating a drug. Once the patent of a brand name drug expires, companies are allowed to essentially make copies of the drug. These copies then have to be approved before they are sold. All generics must have the same active ingredient and work in the same manner as the brand name counterparts.
